Sultan concerned about graft in law enforcement
KLANG: The spate of graft and abuse of power cases among enforcement officers and staff in state agencies has raised the concerns of Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
A statement from Istana Alam Shah here said the conduct of those involved in these acts of crime has tarnished the reputation and image of the respective government and enforcement agencies.
“Media reports about the graft committed are reflective of the people’s rejection of action that can adversely affect the smooth running of the government administration,” it said.
It added, in the event graft continues to grow, it will result in the people losing confidence towards the ability of government agencies in implementing enforcement action.
The statement said Sultan Sharafuddin urged and advised officers and staff in all local governments, Selangor Islamic Religious Department and other government agencies entrusted with enforcement to not implicate themselves with graft and fraudulent conduct.
“This also includes aspects of abuse of power for personal gain or the benefit of certain quarters when carrying out enforcement duties,” it said, adding that such conduct must be avoided at all cost.
The statement said Sultan Sharafuddin also emphasised that Islam prohibited graft and abuse of power among those entrusted with position and power.
“Graft is conduct that betrays the nation’s and society’s trust,” it said.
It added that the Ruler also urged all enforcement officers and staff to carry out their duties and responsibilities prudently as well as by adhering to all standard operating procedures.
“They have to be fair to all parties when implementing enforcement action,” it said.
The statement said being prudent when initiating action must always be prioritised to upkeep public peace and security.
“Carry out your responsibilities with trustworthiness for the sake of the people and nation,” said the statement.
