In-form Maniam tops ‘Swing Back’ tournament

-

MANY golfers have warmly welcomed the easing of restrictions on tournaments and MST Golf have embraced this with events lined up to reward their loyal patrons and customers with their Swing Back to Golf event.

One such tournament was held at Palm Garden Golf Club in collaboration with TaylorMade Golf and proved a huge success.

With all the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) and preventative measures in place, the tournament had a field of just under 100 players, who set out to challenge the Ted Parslowdesigned tract.

At the end of the day it was S.P. Maniam who topped the leaderboard. The single handicapper and winner of several local amateur tournaments returned with a score of 41 points. He went home with a set of TaylorMade SIM Max irons, worth a pretty penny.

But that was not all that Maniam won on the day. He also figured prominently in the novelty contests. He picked up the prize for the Nearest-to-Pin competition on Hole 12 after his ball came to rest just seven inches from the cup.

Pleased with his performance in Putrajaya, Maniam said: “It was a good day out there for me. I thought I played well, as I struck the ball solid and my short-game also came in. On the greens I putted well too. So overall, I think it worked out just fine.

“It was also nice to go out and play some competitive golf and see some familiar faces on the course. And with this big field, there were some good players there – so to finish up with the win was really satisfying.”

Wong Fook Ying also got in on the act, winning the Nearest-toLine challenge after his tee-shot at the 16th hole was 1ft 8in out.

The Longest Drive prize went to big-hitter Alex Yau. He drove his tee-shot 274m on the 10th hole.

MST managing director K.P. Low said they were “happy” with the turnout and standard of play exhibited on the day.

“There were some really good players here at Palm Garden and that always lifts the quality of the competition. It makes it exciting for the field and that’s what we want to see – the players enjoying themselves.”

In all there was some RM30,000 worth of prizes on offer at the Stableford event, where goodie bags worth RM500 worth of TaylorMade merchandise was presented to all the participants before the start of the tournament.

Among other activations was the experience of testing some of the latest products from TaylorMade out on the course.
