Cultural experiences, high teaching standards and good employment prospects make the UK a learning destination of choice
A HIGHER education in the United Kingdom enables students to become the most confident, most promising, and most prepared version of themselves as they pursue their chosen careers.
The combination of rich cultural experiences, a warm and welcoming life, exceptional teaching standards and excellent employment prospects make the UK unique, and the best possible place for international studies.
Many Malaysians can attest to this. Over the past decade, 76,190 Malaysian students have studied in the UK, with 15,000 in the academic year of 2018-2019.
Two of the world’s top three universities are in the UK, and a further 26 UK universities and colleges are among the world’s 200 best institutions for learning.
Imperial College London and Cambridge University Malaysian alumnus Asrif Omar said that studying in the UK has enabled him to discover the “lifelong learner” in him.
“It was something I didn’t know I had. I found myself growing increasingly curious and seeking out more.
“The drive comes from the openness of faculty members and fellow students in discussing diverse thoughts and ideas no matter how contrasting they could be,” he said.
Student safety
The health and well-being of international students is the UK’s number one priority, and universities are ensuring they are safe and supported.
Many universities have already implemented Covid-19 support services that both current and future international students can access.
Almost all universities are preparing to deliver some form of in-person teaching this autumn term.
Some will blend face-to-face learning with online technology and tools to support student education and ensure teaching is delivered in a safe environment.
University of Exeter Malaysian student Idris Din said: “The university has been attentive, especially giving well-being support to students.”
An example is the option to use card payments for all shopping facilities on campus to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection.
Applications until October
It’s not too late to apply. “Clearing” is how universities and colleges fill any places they still have on their courses.

Work in the UK
From summer of next year, international students will be able to stay in the UK and work, or look for work for two years after graduation. PhD students will have three years to do the same.
The route will be available to international students with a valid tier four visa at the time of application and who have successfully completed a degree at undergraduate level or above at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance.
UK graduates are among the most employable in the world and the majority believe they have progressed more quickly in their career, gained promotions and earned more because of a UK education.
“My university has a specific module called ‘employability’, whereby they practically prepare final year students for employment. They guided me on how to write a personal statement, go through a list of skills, and gave me advice,” said Sheffield Hallam University alumna Nurul Amanie El Nahta.
With the Graduate Route in place, it’s an exciting time for Malaysian students graduating next year onwards to experience a world class education and work in the UK.
