Motorists stop wrong-way driver from further harm
PETALING JAYA: A man who drove an SUV against traffic and collided with a car on Jalan Klang Lama is alleged to have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.
A video clip circulated on social media showed the driver of a Volvo hitting another car while onlookers standing nearby tried to stop him in the incident on Friday.
A woman, believed to be the other car driver, shouted for help. Several motorcycle riders then intervened to help. One of them managed to open the man’s car door.
In the video clip, that driver appeared dazed and confused.
After a report on the incident was lodged, the 35-year-old suspect turned himself in yesterday afternoon at the Jalan Bandar police station. He was then arrested.
Bernama reported Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya saying an investigation was being carried out under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act for dangerous driving and under the Dangerous Drugs Act for drug abuse.
“After receiving a report on the incident, which went viral on social media, police summoned both drivers to the police station to lodge a report.
“Both individuals showed up at the Jalan Bandar police station,” he said.
He also said the case would be referred to the public prosecutor as soon as possible.
According to the report, the driver of the SUV tested positive for drugs.
There was a similar incident in June when an SUV ended up on the motorcycle lane on the Federal Highway.
In that incident, a 53-year-old driver was said to have followed GPS instructions guiding him to his destination but was surprised to find himself driving on the motorcycle lane.
The presence of his large vehicle annoyed motorcyclists, who wondered how he ended up on their lane.
