Free laptops for needy students

-

FORMS Four and Five students from B40 families or under government schemes for low-income families are invited to apply for free laptops under the Rotary International District 3300 Malaysia “A Student A Laptop” project.

The recently launched project is set to benefit some 2,000 needy students nationwide.

Applications can be made through a Rotary Club which will ensure that the students have Internet connection. The progress of the recipients will also be monitored until completion of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam next year.

Addressing the pressing need of students who are deprived of necessary tools to help them cope with distance learning amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the project aims to provide equal opportunity for students to access educational resources.

Noting that students from low-income and marginalised families were the most affected in their studies during the movement control order, Rotary district governor Teoh Kwan Swee said the “A Student A Laptop” project was focused on education and built on sustainable relief.

“Most students depend on computers to have access to their studies. Some rely on smartphones and those who do not have the means for either of these gadgets were left out of education in the new norm,” he said, adding that Brickfields Asia College will provide free access to SPMflix – a free education portal for Form Four and Form Five students with content ranging from lesson videos to short notes – to help them prepare for the SPM.

The Rotary Club has also set up a laptop bank to receive donations of laptops of not more than four-years-old from the public.

Project leader and Rotary past district governor Siti Subaidah said: “We welcome donations from individuals and companies for bulk donations. The laptops will be refurbished and installed with the necessary software before they are handed over to students who qualify to receive the aid.”
