Lower than expected water level also leaves authorities puzzled

KLANG: The high tide along Selangor coastal areas which was expected to be damaging has turned out to be a tame affair.
The lower than expected tide level also left the authorities puzzled.
Port Klang Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Shahrin Ahmad said the tide appeared to be lower yesterday compared to Saturday.
Shahrin said the water started rising at 6am and receded within an hour.
“It did not call for any evacuation. The houses near the riverbanks saw some water seeping in but it was only ankle-deep and people were actually walking in it and having some fun,’’ he said.
Kuala Selangor Fire Station chief Ismail Zakaria said the water only rose to a foot high.
“There was no damage at all along Kuala Selangor’s 25km coastal stretch. Only a small stretch of the Kuala Selangor main road saw some water coming in and even that was only in a small amount,” he said.
Ismail added that he saw some pictures of the tide taken by drones which appeared to be massive.
“I was quite taken aback seeing how terrible it looked from above but it was a different story on the ground,” he said.
He added that although the high tide occurrence was only predicted to take place on Saturday and yesterday, they were still on standby for any eventuality today.
Selangor Disaster Management Unit chief Ahmad Fairuz Mohd Yusof meanwhile said several areas around Klang and Sabak Bernam experienced minor seawater overflow due to the phenomenon.
He said among the areas detected with water level exceeding the embankment as at 11.30am in
Klang were Sungai Keramat Kampung Batu 4, Batu 7 (Kampung Sementa), Kampung Tok Muda and Batu 7 Kampung Sementa jetty.
Other areas included Kampung Delek, Jalan Banting Pandamaran, Kampung Baru Telok Gong, Kampung Tradisi and Kampung Pendamar.
“Three houses at Kampung Pendamar were slightly flooded by an overflow, however, the water has receded. Embankments at the coast are stable and in good condition and the situation is still safe and under control,” he said.
In Sabak Bernam, a minor overflow was detected at Bagan Sekinchan, Pantai Batu 23, Sungai Haji Dorani, Bagan Sungai Besar, Sungai Burung, Parit Baru Baruh, Kampung Baru and Sungai Nibong.
“No residential area is affected,” said Ahmad Fairuz.
