PUTRAJAYA: The National Environment Day 2020 celebrations next month will be observed under new norms in view of the pandemic.

Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said to comply with Covid-19 guidelines, many programmes slated for the celebrations would be held online.

“Themed ‘Environment: Our Shared Responsibility’, the National Environment Day celebrations will be observed under new norms.

“Even though this year will be different from previous years, we still want the public to be aware that environmental sustainability is the responsibility of every one of us.

“I was told the organising committee has arranged for more than 35 programmes, including online activities and webinars.

“The National Environment Day is part of Malaysia’s commitment to protect the ozone layer,” said Tuan Ibrahim at the pre-launch of the ministry’s National Environment Day 2020 celebrations and the World Ozone Day event.

The occasion is celebrated annually on Oct 21, with the aim to create public awareness on the conservation of the environment as well as keeping it sustainable.

“This year, we will focus on the usage of single-use plastic and also the proper disposal of electric and electronic items,” he said.

The ministry also observed the World Ozone Day celebrations at the same event yesterday.

Tuan Ibrahim said Malaysia was aiming to phase out the usage of hydrocholoro fluorocarbons (HCFC) by 2040.

“The government is coming up with strategies that will encourage more industries to switch to ozone-friendly technology,” he said.
