PORT KLANG: Some parents of students attending a secondary school here have decided to keep their children at home after two students tested positive for Covid19.

According to a parent who declined to be named, she found out about the infection through WhatsApp messages purportedly being circulated among teachers in the school that were forwarded to her.

“I decided not to take any risks and will keep my daughter at home until I get more information about the actual situation,’’ she said.

When contacted, Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman confirmed the two Covid-19 positive cases at SMK Pendamaran Jaya here.

“I have already conveyed the situation to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor Education director Izmi Ismail said he was informed that the two students had been quarantined and the state Health Department officers visited the school at noon.

“The school has also sanitised the classrooms,” he added.

In the WhatsApp messages that were being circulated, teachers were instructed to arrive early at the school to sanitise the classrooms.

Another message stated that as there was no directive from the state Education Department on the need to vacate the premises, parents who were concerned over their children’s safety need not send them to school.

Teachers were also told to prevent students from going to the computer and science labs, as well as other shared premises to limit exposure.

Students were also prohibited from gathering in groups including going to the toilet in pairs.

It is not known how the two students contracted Covid-19 but according to a parent who went to the school to take his daughter home, the children were from a Sabahan family.

According to the parent, the family had returned home to Sabah for a visit recently.

It is learnt that there is a big community of Sabahans in the vicinity who live in low cost apartments and shophouses in Port Klang and nearby Bukit Tinggi in Klang.

Officers from the state Health Department were seen entering the school at around noon.
