Seventh heaven
No place like home to win title, says top hitman Cabrera
PETALING JAYA: Gonzalo Cabrera, arguably Johor Darul Ta’zim’s best striker, wants to give home fans a seventh consecutive Super League title at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today.
For almost four years, Cabrera has dazzled fans and tormented defenders with his mazy runs, silk-like dribbling and venomous shots from in and outside the box.
The Argentinian, who also holds Iraq citizenship, joined the Southern Tigers in 2017 and is

now the team’s all-time leading top scorer with 57 goals, after his goal against PJ City last weekend.
He upstaged former captain Safiq Rahim, who scored 56 for the club.
This season alone, the former Boca Juniors player has scored six goals in nine matches, the best among the wingers in the Super League.
And today all JDT need is a draw to confirm the title but Cabrera only has eyes for a win and three points.
“I try to give my best every game. Last five games I think we showed that we could produce good performances,” said the 31-year-old, who also played for Saudi Arabian club Al-Faisaly and Colombian side Once Caldas.
“I feel very proud and it’s an honour to be the top scorer.
“It would not have happened if it was not for my teammates, the staff, the supporters, my family and the support from TMJ (club owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim).
“Sabah are a tough side. Our previous match against them, we only managed to beat them in injury time.
“For today’s match we are going to focus on winning and we are not thinking of other results,” added Cabrera.
JDT have been almost indomitable this season after collecting 23 points from nine matches.
They have won seven games and drawn two thus far, to show the rest that they are indeed champions in the making.
