Irfan eyeing national final in Johor
THE Perodua National Amateur Golf Series qualifying round at Forest City Golf Resort in Johor proved a major success with more than 120 competitive golfers drawn from around the state, including Batu Pahat, Kluang, Segamat, Muar and Johor Bahru – eyeing the chance to represent Johor in the nation final scheduled next year September, at the same venue.
When the counting was done it was 21-year old Irfan Syahmi Norhshaharudin, a scratch player, who clinched the A Category title with a one-over nett 73, while Mohamad Shafiee Abdullah won the B Category with a 67.
The other winners were Hafiz Iskandar Abu Amin who claimed the C Category, Hasbullah Hassan Ismail who won the D Category and Suliman Samin who clinched the E Category.
“I am looking forward to represent Johor in the national final next year,” said Irfan, who featured in the 2016 Sukma Games. “It should be an advantage for us as the venue will be in Forest City again,” he said.
The Perodua event is a series of qualifiers conducted in all 14 States and Wilayah Persekutuan, followed by the national final which is set for Forest City Sept 4, 2021.
The five champions from there will represent the Malaysia in the world final of the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) in Cancun, Mexico, from October 16 to 23, 2021.
Perodua are the title sponsor, and Panasonic, Srixon and Zurich General Insurance Malaysia the co-sponsors.
The event is also supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board and Malaysian Golf Association, with Astro as the broadcasting partner.
Perodua chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin and WAGC president Isac Saminathan were at the Johor qualifying round.
