Khairul and Co eager for action in two local tourneys
PETALING JAYA: Olympian Khairul Anuar Mohd (pic) and Co will finally get to taste some action with the return of two local archery tournaments.
And the news has certainly lifted up the mood in the national team as they have been without tournaments for some time since making a return to training in June.
The squad will take part in an Open tournament in Terengganu from Oct 19-26 and it will be followed by another Open in Johor from Dec 1-7.
The tournament in Johor will be a test run for the Malaysia Games (Sukma), which will be held in April next year in the southern state.
National coach Lee Jae-hyung is looking forward to assessing the standard of his charges at the two upcoming tournaments.
“We’ve been having quality training sessions, our archers have been evaluating their performances, which is good,” said Jae-hyung.
“The condition of the archers is okay, including Khairul.”
Khairul had been bugged by a nagging shoulder injury for some time but with his good form in training, it shows that the issue is not a bother any longer.
Khairul is the only archer who has qualified for next year’s Tokyo Games by virtue of winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Holland last year.
He represented Malaysia at the London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro ( 2016) Olympics but returned home without any medals.
“I know the archers are eager to compete in Terengganu, it will be also a good chance for me to see where they stand,” he added.
