It is hard to put it into words. The first season, promotion and title. What else can you ask for? As a Penang born, this is an awesome feeling.

PETALING JAYA: While the fireworks adorned the southernmost part of the nation, a plucky side from the north were also celebrating a title of their own.

Penang sealed the Premier League title for the first time after beating Kelantan United 4-0 at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Friday with one match to go before the season ends.

Their goals were scored by South Korean winger Lee Chang-hoon (18th minute), Al-Hafiz Harun (20th), Bobby Gonzales (53rd) and Casagrande (73rd).

They had earlier booked their spot for next season’s Super League after beating Kuala Lumpur 2-1 at the City Stadium on Sept 19.

For captain Azmi Muslim, it was memorable as it’s his first season with his boyhood team.

Since he made his professional debut in 2006 for UPB-My Team, he has not played for Penang, and this season, the 33-year-old leftback joined them and was immediately made captain by coach Manzoor Azwira.

“It is hard to put it into words. The first season, promotion and title. What else can you ask for? As a Penang born, this is an awesome feeling. I am happy, proud and humbled,” said the former national player.

“The reason for our success is the fact that we are all close-knit. We know our responsibilities and also the mission of the team.

“We are family, and I hope that the brotherhood continues for the 2021 season.

“Coach Manzoor has done so well to combine the senior and younger players in the team.

“He is serious in every aspect, and I expect him to bring that same energy to the Super League.”

In 10 games so far, the Panthers have won eight games and drawn two and will hope to end the season unbeaten.

They face Terengganu II in the last game at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Oct 9.

The team’s Brazilian trio of Casagrande, Endrick Santos and Rafael Vitor together with South Korean winger Lee Chang-hoon have been instrumental.

Casagrande, especially, has been a real thorn for teams in the league as he has scored nine goals and provided three assists.

Endrick, a playmaker, has also been instrumental as he has scored eight goals.

Azmi said they would prepare from now for the Super League.

They last played in the top division in 2017, when they finished last in the league.

In 2017 and 2018, they finished 10th and seventh respectively in the Premier League.

“We have to be prepared in every aspect. From players to tactics, we have to plan well because it is not easy to compete against the sides in the Super League.”

They have 26 points in the Premier League, five points ahead of Kuala Lumpur, who have also been promoted to the Super League.
