Sunway Education Group joins UN network for greener world
THE Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development (JSC) is now the world’s third United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) centre.
Located in Sunway University, the news is timely as Sunway Education Group celebrates the fifth anniversary of the launch of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“At Sunway University, we are dedicated to championing sustainability within and around the campus, in the continuous effort to make the world a stronger and greener place.
“By instilling sustainable practices into various aspects of our university’s experience, we hope to nurture a community of socially and ecologically responsible individuals for today and tomorrow”, said Sunway Education Group chief executive officer Dr Elizabeth Lee.
In conjunction with the anniversary, the group also launched a board game called ‘Are You the Master of Sustainability?’
The multiplayer board game, Sunway Education Group said in a press release, aims to create awareness and understanding of the UN SDGs. Players learn how to preserve the earth’s resources for future generations.
The university’s staff from JSC and students from the Master in Sustainable Development Management programme designed, developed, and crafted the questions for the game.
Lee said greater knowledge of the UN SDGs will result in a new generation of leaders who will drive solutions and solve social and environmental issues, guiding the world to a more sustainable trajectory.
The university’s collective purpose, Lee added, is to educate as many people as they can to be responsible citizens and do their bit to benefit the environment.
“We are constantly stepping up our efforts to improve current practices and doing more to protect and preserve our planet.
“This year, we hope to reach out, create awareness and advance the UN SDGs to a wider audience with the ‘Are You the Master of Sustainability?’ board game.”
Sunway University vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson said: “The UN SDGs encompass several urgent issues in the world today such as global poverty, access to education, climate change and the need for responsible consumption and production.
“The board game will be an interesting tool to help spread awareness as well as knowledge of the UN SDGs.”
The first edition of the board game, Sunway Education Group said, will be gifted to corporate leaders in recognition of their support for the UN SDGs.
