Samsung STEM competition offers RM37,900 in prizes
A COMPETITION to stimulate students’ curiosity and to cultivate their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education will be held this month.
The “Solve for Tomorrow” competition which kicked off Friday will end on Dec 8.
Organised by Samsung Malaysia and the Universiti Malaya (UM) STEM Centre, the competition focuses on fostering innovative thinking, creative problem-solving and teamwork.
The competition is open to Forms One and Two students from secondary schools UM STEM
Centre regularly engages with.
“We have to enhance science and technology knowledge among our youngsters to solve future problems we will be facing.
“They can only paint a better picture if they are equipped with the correct tools and the best way to ensure the mechanism is accurate is through science and technology education,” UM STEM Centre head Dr Mas Sahidayana Mohktar said in a press release.
Samsung Malaysia Electronics president Yoonsoo Kim said it is important for the next generation to be equipped with the fundamental skills, knowledge and attitude needed to adapt to the technological change.
This will benefit them through new opportunities technology creates.
“We believe in their potential to reach new heights of innovation and to develop society-changing solutions.
“Samsung is committed to helping them achieve this through the educational programmes we run like ‘Solve for Tomorrow’,” he added.
The competition is an ideal platform for students to be exposed to science and technology, he said, adding that it allows students to harness their full potential through the use of technology.
It is also an opportunity to engage and encourage students’ curiosity in STEM while making a difference in society.
Participants are required to identify an issue faced by the community and develop a solution based on STEM technology, Samsung Malaysia Electronics said.
They can propose ideas focusing on any of the four themes; health, education, environmental and social issues.
A team of three students must send in essay submissions, depicting the problem to be solved and how STEM can be a creative solution.
Prizes worth a total of RM37,900 are up for grabs for the three final teams.
Winners will walk away with Samsung products for their respective schools and for themselves.
The team clinching the first prize will receive Samsung products worth up to RM16,900 for the school while each student will take home RM7,000 worth of Samsung products.
