Wrist injury ends Gavin’s challenge in England

-

A wrist injury has put paid to Gavin Green’s hopes of a good finish in the US$7mil (RM29mil) BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour’s flagship event, in England.

The 26-year-old had to settle for joint-48th spot after blowing up with a four-over 76 to finish on a 288 total at the Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey on Sunday.

Gavin had begun promisingly in the opening round when he fired a 67 to be tied-sixth and just one shot off the lead.

He then followed it up with a 71 to reach the halfway stage in joint10th.

But Gavin’s old wrist injury flared up just when it mattered most and had to battle through the pain in the last two days.

Gavin had hoped to make amends for his poor display at the previous week’s Scottish Open where he also had a good start before ending up tied-42nd.

“I’m definitely disappointed. I had two really good starts (in the past two tournaments) but didn’t get a chance to finish well,” he said.

“Last week in Scotland I had an inflamed finger and this week it was my wrist.”

The tied-48th is still Gavin’s best result in his three appearances at the Wenworth. He came in joint72nd last year and joint-52nd in his debut in 2018.

Gavin is determined to recover to tee off in the Scottish Championship which starts on Thursday at the Fairmont St Andrews.

But his participation will depend very much on the outcome of his magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

Gavin has dropped three rungs to No. 40 in the season-long Race to Dubai points competition, but he remains on the right track to make the top-60 cut for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in December.
