Sivasangari out to get even with Wee Wern

PETALING JAYA: It’s back to the drawing board for S. Sivasangari who came within a whisker of winning her second women’s national squash title.

The 21-year-old Kedah lass, the current national No. 2, was leading defending champion and national No. 1 Low Wee Wern 6-3 in the deciding set but lost out 3-11, 11-7, 11-6, 3-11, 11-9 in the final of the National Squash Championships.

So it’s back to training and analysing her game before the next two assignments in the country – the PSA Tour 1 from Nov 25-28 and PSA Tour 2 from Dec 2-5 – which tentatively will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

“I will be playing the first one and I’m not sure if I will be around to play the second one. The tournament will be like the national meet again,” said Sivasangari.

“There will be pressure playing against the juniors and Wee Wern will be there too.”

Sivasangari is still sore with her defeat.

“It’s disappointing. I was leading in the fifth set and was so eager to win which caused me to made errors. All credit to Wee Wern as she managed to dig in hard for the win,” she said.

“Overall my performance was much better than the semi-final and I felt much more positive despite juggling my time between studies and squash.”

The Cornell University sophomore student said she would work on fixing her weak spots with her coach Ajaz Azmat (local) and her coaches at Cornell – David Palmer and Mark Burke.

“I will definitely work with Ajaz and coach Palmer and Burke, who watched the final match online to get more info.

“I will work hard and hope to come back stronger.”

She hopes to return to the US to continue training but the rising Covid-19 cases is causing a major concern.

“The cases went down and now it’s going up again, it’s frustrating. I want to go back to US to start my training programme as I have been here since March.”
