E-graduation for new norm
A VIRTUAL Declaration of Diploma and Degree Conferment Ceremony was held for a graduating class of 2020, in line with the new norm.
The Multimedia University (MMU) held the ceremony earlier this month with more than 2,600 graduates attending virtually from their homes through live streaming via the university’s official Facebook page.
It was streamed from MMU’s Cyberjaya campus in the presence of a select and small group of attendees.
The conferment was announced by Tun Datuk Seri Zaki Tun Azmi, the chancellor of MMU.
While this year’s convocation ceremony is postponed to next year, the university felt that it was only right to celebrate those who had worked extremely hard to complete their education and achieve extraordinary accomplishments.
The event marked the achievements of four diploma students, 23 bachelors degree students and 11 postgraduate students.
Hazmi Hamizan Mohd Zaki, from the Faculty of Management, won the Chancellor’s Award by virtue of completing his Bachelor of Analytical Economics with First Class Honours, with a CGPA of 3.99.
The award is given to the outstanding first-time Bachelor graduand for his academic and co-curricular achievements.
On top of that, he made the Dean’s list for all his eligible trimesters, founded his own company, and is currently working as an investment analyst with Khazanah Nasional Berhad.
An excited Hazmi said: “This is not the usual way (we graduate) as most of the graduates are at home and not here in graduation robes.
“If not for the on-going pandemic, we (graduates) would already be having our convocation. However, despite all this, not even the pandemic can take away our achievements,” he added.
Adding that he was honoured to receive the award, Hazmi called on MMU graduates to emulate the success achieved by notable MMU alumni such as Usamah Zaid Mohd Yassin, the director of the movie Ejen Ali and Nizam Abdul Razak of Boboiboy fame.
“If they can do it, why can’t we? We just have to go for it,” said Hazmi, who also won the MMU Alumni Leadership Award.
During the ceremony, MMU president Prof Datuk Dr Mazliham Mohd Su’ud said he was happy that their graduates are not only capable of developing themselves but are also inspiring others.
“As an institution, we are responsible for helping to groom future generations,” he added.
The ceremony also witnessed Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) graduate Hasan E.H. Abulaban from Palestine receiving the President’s Award for his academic and co-curricular accomplishments.
Hasan also received the MMU Leadership Award together with Chai Yee Ting and Chia Jason from the same faculty.
