PGM in a quandary over three remaining tournaments

- By TAN MNG WAI

PETALING JAYA: The Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) are in a race against time to complete their fourleg Tour.

The country’s domestic circuit made a successful comeback with the staging of the MNRB Championship at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club last month.

However, the conditional movement control order (CMCO) enforced in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya since Oct 14 forced the Northport Championship (Oct 21024) at the same venue to be postponed.

Golf is one of the sport allowed to be played under the CMCO, but competition is prohibited.

With another few weeks lost due to the CMCO’s extension until Nov 9 and possibly longer, PGM are now left sweating whether they are able to hold the remaining three events.

Also in the schedule are the UMW Championship (Nov 18-21) at the Kota Seriemas Golf and Country Club in Nilai and the Kinrara Championship at the Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong from Nov 25-28.

PGM general manager Nik Mustapha Nik Mohd said they will do their best to provide members with playing opportunities should the circumstances permit.

“Looks like it’s going to be difficult to get the remaining three tournaments completed,” said Nik.

“But we’re not giving up. Hopefully the situation gets better soon, then we may look to extend the season into December, which is a viable option for us.”

The season-opener at Glenmarie was won by Gavin Green after he finished four strokes ahead of veteran Sukree Othman.

The women’s title went to Aretha Pan, who fended off a spirited challenge from amateur star Winnie Ng to win by a stroke.
