PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Cup will kick off as scheduled despite the extension of the conditional movement control order in several states from Oct 27 to Nov 9.

The competition will start with the first round on Nov 6 and the government’s decision is expected to affect Sabah and the Klang Valleybased teams – Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya City and UiTM.

The Malaysia Football League will have their board of directors meeting today and will discuss the option of playing matches in the evening.

Their chief operating officer Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan said they will ensure that the oldest football competition in South-East Asia will take place.

“The Malaysia Cup will continue although the number of Covid-19 cases are rising lately. We will do the necessary adjustment in match organisation,” said Ab Ghani.

“Cancelling the competition could put us in trouble financially with our sponsors so we need to continue with the schedule that we have announced.”

Ab Ghani added that the postponed Super League match between Sabah and UiTM and the Premier League’s Kuala Lumpur-Kuching game will be held at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka on Oct 31.

“Both matches will be played at the same venue. KL-Kuching in the evening and Sabah-UiTM at night,” he added.
