PETALING JAYA: For Ghanaian striker Jordan Mintah (pic) ,hehad an ideal reason to join Kuching City for the new season.

The 28-year-old is a big admirer of The Cats’ coach Aidil Sharin. The Singaporean made his mark while coaching Kedah from 2019-2022, guiding them to the FA Cup in 2019 and two Super League runners-up finishes in 2020 and 2021.

Aidil took over as Kuching City coach last year and led them to a runners-up spot in the Challenge Cup.

Mintah, who played for Terengganu from 2020-2023, said that he would have joined Kuching City in the second transfer window last season.

“For some reason, the loan move did not happen. I guess there was some misunderstanding, which was a bummer for me. But I’m glad to have made a permanent move this season. The best thing was coach Aidil wanted me to come over,” said Mintah, who is known for his colourful and joyful character.

“When you have one of the best coaches in the Super League calling you, you can’t say no. I know Aidil can only make me a better player. I’m glad to answer his call and move to Borneo for the first time.”

Besides Mintah, the other new Kuching City signings are Ivorian striker Tchetche Kipre, Nigerian centreback James Okwuosa, Guyanese midfielder Keanu Marsh-brown, centreback Rodney Celvin Akwensivie, wingbacks Filemon Anyie Standly and Arif Fadzilah, goalkeeper Shahril Saa’ri, and wingers Nur Shamie Iszuan Amin and Zharmien Asyraf.

Mintah is also looking forward to a reunion with Tchetche, Arif and Petrus, who are all his former Terengganu teammates.

“They are my friends as well as teammates, and I look forward to a great season with them.’’
