Eliminating white spots
TINEA versicolour is a fungal infection of the skin also commonly known as white spots. It is caused by a type of yeast that naturally exists on our skin called Malassezia, which grows out of control, resulting in white spots or rash.
This yeast is commonly found in areas of the skin which has high sebum content - usually the upper body. Tinea versicolour can be visually identified or expressed via skin discolouration (a pale or dark tan), rashes, spots or patches, dry, itchy or scaly skin. The condition can range from mild to serious, occurring commonly on areas that are inclined to moisture and oil such as the neck, chest, back and arms.
While the condition is not partial to certain age or skin colour, it is commonly known to strike teens and young adults. Infection can be induced due to:
1. oily skin; 2. warm climate and humid
weather; 3. heavy perspiration; and 4. weak immune system.
HYGIENIC SOLUTION There is a high incidence of tinea versicolour in Malaysia affecting 40% of our population. This is primarily due to our tropical climate which promotes fungal infection, especially affecting those who perspire a great deal. While the spots may disappear when the weather cools down, it resumes when it turns warmer.
Tinea versicolour can be treated and cured with proper skin care. Cleansing is essential in managing the skin disease. However, a simple cleanser which primarily removes dirt, sweat and dead skin during our daily showers will not do the trick. A medicated cleanser is required to help clear the fungal infection.
