Sunny Perth

> Australia’s sunshine capital offers plenty to explore and experience in one of the world’s most liveable cities

-

THERE is a reason why Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is always ranked high on the list of the world’s most liveable cities. It is Australia’s sunniest capital, and all the finest ingredients for a fantastic holiday can be found here.

If you like walking, you will enjoy exploring Kings Park, one of the biggest city parks in the world, as well as the Perth Botanic Garden.

Take in the gorgeous views of the Swan and Canning Rivers, the city skyline and the Darling Ranges as you traverse bushland trails, admire manicured gardens and stop at one of the many cafés in the area.

Be sure to check out Perth’s glittering skyscrapers, funky neighbourhoods, beautiful colonial architecture and hip wine bars, along the way.

The small bar movement has grown substantially, with many popping up across the city centre and surrounding suburbs. The dining scene is also booming.

Don’t miss Perth’s beachside towns. Stop in Scarborough for coffee before taking to the waves at Trigg and North Beaches.

Catch the spectacular sunset across the waters of Cottesloe Beach, a great spot for families and picnics under shady Norfolk Pines.

Thirty minutes from Perth is Fremantle Harbour, where you will find colonial remnants like the Fremantle Prison, the Arts Centre and Old Courthouse.

You can also learn more about this country’s seafaring history at the Maritime Museum and Shipwreck Galleries, then stop for a drink from a choice of 43 tap beers at the landmark Sail & Anchor, built in 1843.

There are many great places in Fremantle to enjoy artisanal beer, as well as great food. If you are there on a weekend, check out the awesome weekend markets.

You can also hop on a ferry for a day trip to Rottnest Island. This car-free island is only accessible by ferry, helicopter or private boat. Here you can relax on one of more than 60 beaches, snorkel over coral reefs and dive to explore shipwrecks.

You can also hire a bike or a Segway to explore the island and get close to some cute quokkas – a marsupial found only in Western Australia.

Wine lovers can head to Swan Valley, a 25-minute drive northeast of Perth. The state’s oldest wine region has over 40 vineyards and many cellar doors offering tastings.

You can cycle through the vineyards or take a cruise upriver, sipping local wines and enjoying the scenery. There are also cheese-making classes and chocolate shops around for those looking to complete their winedrinking experience.

For those who looking for some retail therapy in the city, make a beeline for the fashion boutiques in King Street.

Big-name brands can be found inside the Murray and Hay Street malls, while those who like something more eclectic should head to Northbridge, Mount Lawley, Leederville, Subiaco or Victoria Park.
