Aus­tralia Week at Sun­way Col­lege

FELT pretty much like Down Un­der at the Sun­way Cam­pus when the col­lege chose to ini­ti­ate Aus­tralia Week for the first time early this month. Sun­way Cam­pus stu­dents and staff of var­i­ous Aus­tralian pro­grammes in­clud­ing its Monash Univer­sity Foun­da­tion Year (Mufy), Aus­tralian Ma­tric­u­la­tion (Aus­mat), bach­e­lor and de­gree cour­ses un­der Vic­to­ria Univer­sity (VU), got to cel­e­brate Aussie cul­ture and val­ues.

The event­ful week saw a line-up of ex­cit­ing events com­pris­ing Mufy Shar­ity Car­ni­val, Aus­tralian Slang Com­pe­ti­tion, Aus­maz­ing Race and Aus­tralian foot­ball tour­na­ments but com­menced with an open­ing cer­e­mony graced by the Aus­tralian High Com­mis­sioner to Malaysia him­self, Rod Smith.

Other no­ta­bles in­cluded Sun­way Group ed­u­ca­tion and health­care di­vi­sion CEO Dr Lee Weng Keng School Cur­ricu­lum and Stan­dards Au­thor­ity (SCSA) Board of West­ern Aus­tralia chair­man Prof Pa­trick Gar­nett and his wife Dr Pam Gar­nett, Sun­way Group Exco mem­ber Puan Sri Su­san Cheah, Sun­way Col­lege ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor Teo Ee Sing, Sun­way Col­lege chief ex­ec­u­tive Dr Khati­jah Khalid and many oth­ers.

Na­tional an­thems Ne­garaku and Ad­vance Aus­tralia Fair were both per­formed by Jay Teoh of the Aus­mat pro­gramme, on sax­o­phone. This was a “bot­tler” and on the whole, as the Aussie’s say “grouse”!

DID YOU KNOW? Ac­cord­ing to Aus­tralian High Com­mis­sioner to Malaysia Rod Smith, there are over 24,000 Malaysians en­rolled in higher ed­u­ca­tion in­sti­tu­tions in Aus­tralia and another 20,000 in Malaysia, en­rolled in Aus­tralian pro­grammes.
