Inaugural Rhodes Scholarship application is now open
THE Rhodes Trust is seeking out young Malaysians who are ready to be leaders of the world’s future. Through the Rhodes Scholarship, administered by the Rhodes Trust, a postgraduate award is offered to support outstanding protean students who wish to further their studies at the prestigious University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Earlier this year, the Rhodes Trust announced its partnership with Yayasan Khazanah to extend this reach to Malaysians. With that, one deserving applicant from Malaysia will be selected to further their studies at Oxford (beginning October 2017) under the award.
CALLING OXFORD-MATERIAL STUDENTS Globally, only 95 applicants are undertaken into the Rhodes Scholarship each year. The grant covers all university and college fees, and provides a personal stipend for scholars. The Rhodes Trust will also see to an economy class flight to Oxford at the start and conclusion of the scholarship, from and to the student’s home country. Applicants will be assessed against four criteria, which include: literary and scholastic attainments; energy to use one’s talents to the full as demonstrated through extracurricular competency in sport, debate, music, dance, etc.; honesty, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; and moral force of character, as well as instincts to lead and take interest in one’s fellow beings.
Applicants should be between the ages of 19 and 25 years as at Oct 1, 2017 and possess a Bachelor’s degree with First or Upper second class standards (GPA 3.7 or higher) by summer of 2017. A sufficiently high standard of English according to standards set by the University of Oxford is also required.
