Mulan remake to maintain Chinese face

The Sun (Malaysia) - - GOOD VIBES -

AN OPEN letter written by someone with access to an early treatment for 2018’s The Legend of Mulan remake expressed concern that the feature’s original love interest, Captain Li Shang, had been replaced by a “30-something European trader”.

The anonymous insider, writing on Asian American-focused blog Angry Asian Man, pointed out that “by changing the nationality, motivations, and age of her love interest, and making him rather than Mulan the hero, an altered Legend of Mulan would significantly ‘diminish her legacy’ and disappoint fans of the original 1998 animated film ( right).

Now, Vulture website reports that, according to a source close to the new film, The Legend of Mulan has moved on from that early draft.

“Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese,” Vulture said. – AFP-Relaxnews
