Chic coats for cold nights
faux animal skin, to military style, to sporty parkas, there's a style of coat to suit every taste and figure. Don't worry about not following a trend as, thankfully, no single style dominates the latest coat designs.
Our experts give their opinions on which coat to wear when out and about.
The tight-fitting tailored coat is the most classic of all coat designs.
"There are plenty of coats in this style," says personal shopper Andrea Lakeberg. "They include the blazer, the bathrobe-type coat with a belt or wide-shouldered coats." Wear a coat with a waistline to achieve an optically taller look.
"As long as it's not too long, this jacket can look perfect on a slender woman," says stylist Katharina Starlay.
Patterned jackets and check jackets are really in fashion this year.
"Classic black and white Prince of Wales check is coming back into fashion as well as in colours," says Lakeberg. No matter what pattern is chosen, it must suit the wearer's figure. "Tall women can wear large patterns better small women," says Starlay.
"Faux fur remains in fashion," observes stylist Maria Hans. Fake animal skin is most popular in a leopard skin pattern.
"This has become a classic in its own wright," says Hans. It's often worn in bright colours such as red, sky blue or turquoise.
Because it's an eye-catcher, the fake skin jacket should be combined with clothes that won't attract much attention. Fake fur tends to be quite voluminous so it can make the wearer look heavier, advises Starlay.
A military-style jacket with a belt and two rows of buttons will strike a rather serious look. These coats usually come edged with either green or red piping and gold or silver buttons.
"These all ensure that this type of coat draws looks," says stylist Ritchie Karkowski. "By wearing this type of coat you will be the centre of attention. The rest of your outfit should be more muted."
A leather coat is perfect for creating a rockstar look. Trench coat style leather coats in either matt or shiny leather are in fashion. The most important thing to remember here is that the shape must match the wearer's figure. – dpa
