Step up awareness on child sexual abuse

> Rosmah wants spouses of MBs, CMs to goad husbands to hold seminars

- BY LEE CHOON FAI

KUALA LUMPUR: The wives of mentri besars and chief ministers should pressure their husbands to host state-level seminars on child sexual abuse to increase awareness.

The prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, said this will help raise awareness in a more localised manner as opposed to a two-day seminar on the topic at the Putra World Trade Centre

“Go and talk to your husbands and push them to organise such seminars, we as wives may not have power but we can influence them.

“I wish to see all states having seminars on child sexual abuse similar to this in the future,” Rosmah said in her closing speech at the Child Sexual Crimes Seminar yesterday.

She then said all adults, from parents to teachers, have a part to play in preventing such abuse and must cooperate with each other.

Rosmah said this includes giving relevant government agencies such as the police or the Community Welfare Department their full support.

She urged all to not let their enthusiasm on the issue to wane, much like how the second day of the seminar was attended by fewer people than the first day.

“Do not leave so few people to fight for what matters to all of us. We must all keep up the momentum and do our part,” Rosmah said.

She also called on all to support the Child Sexual Crimes Bill which will soon be tabled in Parliament regardless of their differences.

Rosmah added that the government is on the right track in addressing this issue and urged parents to keep a close eye on their children.
