‘Driver may have been in meth haze’

- BY LEE HOOI BOON

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A young woman who drove against traffic flow and caused the death of a man on Tuesday morning was likely in a drug induced haze at the time of the accident.

Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the urine test of the 19-year-old revealed that she tested positive for meth while her blood test results for alcohol were pending.

He said the woman told investigators she saw a stalled lorry in front of her which caused her to make a U-turn resulting in her driving against traffic along the North South Expressway (NSE).

He said the U-turn was made at KM128 of the NSE during the 7.50am incident and she grazed against three vehicles but continued driving. The drivers of the three vehicles suffered light injuries.

He said she continued to drive for some 5km against traffic before crashing into the car driven by Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, at KM134 of the NSE, killing him on the spot.

“She was on her way home to Sungai Dua after a night out with her friends at a night club in Bukit Mertajam,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Nik Ros Azhan, however, said CCTV footage showed there was no stalled lorry on the road.

He said the unemployed youth did not posses any prior criminal records and that no drugs were found in her car but police were also investigating where the meth was from.

“She is the youngest in the family, her father works at a workshop while her mother is a clerk in a factory,” he said, adding the family was cooperating with the police.

Responding to calls from the public to charge the youth for murder, Nik Ros Azhan said the incident happened on the road and that she did not have a motive to kill Mohamad Fandi.

The suspect was brought to the magistrate’s court here yesterday afternoon where magistrate Dianne Ningard Nor Azahar granted a four-day remand order against her.

She arrived at the court complex about 11.50am with her left eye covered in a bandage and her right arm in a sling.
