Selangor ruler hits out at politics of hate
> Public office not platform for any party to abuse, says sultan
SHAH ALAM: Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed disappointment with the current political situation, which he described as “tainted”.
“I wish to state that politics is not simply to hunt for power. It is unfortunate that politics today is tainted with hatred, anger, lies, misunderstanding between one another and racial intolerance,” he said yesterday when opening the first Selangor State Legislative Assembly meeting for this year.
Sultan Sharafuddin said politics is not a platform for any party to abuse.
Accompanying the sultan at the opening ceremony were Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
In his address, the sultan commended the state administration for prioritising the needs of the rakyat above politics.
“I hope the state government will continue the noble political practice that is centered on principles and values,” he said.
He also called for all parties to be responsible in handling water management in Selangor, stressing that water issues should not be politicised.
He said politicising water issues solely for a party’s interests would only jeopardise the interests of the public.
The sultan wanted everyone, including the rakyat and state agencies, to practise prudence when using water.
“Pengurusan Air Selangor needs to continue efforts to provide holistic, efficient and cost-effective water service as well as meet the needs of the rakyat and industry,” he said.
The sultan reminded the people of Selangor to live harmoniously and respect each other by going beyond race and religious boundaries.
“Such a spirit must continue to be nurtured for the survival of a developed state,” he said.
