BALING: An unemployed woman yesterday denied a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating drugs and causing the death of a police officer and his wife in an accident on April 18.

Yeoh Chiew Fern, 36, made the plea after the charge was read out before magistrate Mohd Izmi Ibrahim.

In the 7.15am accident, Baling Anti-Narcotics chief Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38, and his wife, Suriya Abdul Rahman, 37, were killed when a four-wheel vehicle rammed into their car from behind in Kampung Telok Teduri, Jalan Baru Kupang-Baling. Their four children, aged six to 11, were injured.

The charge, under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for an imprisonment of up to 10 years and fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000.

Legal officer at the Baling district office Inspector Harlina Othman, who prosecuted, did not offer bail.

However, the court set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and ordered for Yeoh’s driving licence to be suspended pending the disposal of the case.

The court also fixed May 30 for mention to allow Yeoh to engage a lawyer and for submission of documents. – Bernama
