Sultan Nazrin: Recognise sacrifices of fire fighters
IPOH: Service and welfare programmes drawn up for firefighters must take into account their condition at the age of retirement and not just while they are still in service, said the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.
He said the service package should be commensurate with the sacrifices they made, the responsibilities they bore and the risks they took.
Sultan Nazrin said the operation procedures and equipment provided to them must be reviewed to reduce their risks while performing their jobs.
“The country and the people must also be made more aware of the sacrifices of the firefighters so that they can better appreciate them while still in service and after retirement,” he said during celebrations in conjunction with World Fire Fighters Day at the Ipoh Municipal Hall yesterday.
With the theme “Firefighters, the Mainstay of the Nation’s Safety”, the event involved 27 contingents, 90 vehicle units and 2,100 participants.
Also present was Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.
Noh said a total of 30 new fire and rescue stations are being built across the country to facilitate and enhance operations by the Fire and Rescue Department.
He said the new stations would be in addition to the 284 currently in operation.
“The construction of more fire and rescue stations is to ensure fire fighters are highly skilled and provided with suitable equipment .
“It is also to reduce their response time,” he said in his speech. – Bernama
