Consistent champions
> TAR UC ICT students excel in industry competitions
TUNKU Abdul Rahman University College's (TAR UC) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes are developed to impart the latest industry knowledge and technology as well as prepare students for industry certification so they are technically well-equipped to meet the challenges in the workforce.
This emphasis has resulted in its students to consistently win major ICT industry competitions. Last year, TAR UC students raised the bar higher with more wins and firsts which clearly demonstrate the university college's excellent ICT education.
The most significant win was at the Cisco NetRiders Malaysia 2016 Competition where the students made a clean sweep, winning the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up prizes in the CCNA category. This is the third consecutive year that TAR UC has emerged as champion.
The competition provides a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their networking abilities, learn new IT skills and gain visibility among talent recruiters in the growing ICT and networking field.
Jeffrey Ting Ming Yeong, the champion of the competition is a final year student of the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security.
He beat 660 other registered participants from 11 Cisco Academies to win RM500 cash prize, a challenge trophy, a Roccat Renga gaming headset, and a certificate.
"I was very determined to do my best and I was overjoyed that I pulled through. I am very fortunate to be studying in TAR UC where my lecturers are very knowledgeable in the Cisco Networking programme. They provided good guidance for me to prepare for the competition," Jeffrey shared.
Another win is at the 11th ASEAN Skills Competition where Teoh Jia Jun emerged as the bronze medal winner in the Web Design Category. Currently pursuing his Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security, he is the first Malaysian to have won a medal in the competition.
The three-day competition was divided into seven modules where for module one to three, participants had to revamp old websites by transforming nonresponsive websites into highly interactive and attractive online interfaces. For module four to seven, participants were required to build the interactive elements of a website including the server sites.
"I competed in the competition with no knowledge of what to expect from it. The time frame of three days was very short to learn and apply what I knew to design the websites.
"I am very grateful for the help from my lecturers, Tan Bee Sian and Liaw Chun Voon, who guided and advised me in this competition. I constantly communicated with them to seek their opinions, and they helped me a lot in providing sound advice and ways to complete the assignments in a shorter time frame.
"In addition, certain subjects which I have learned at TAR UC provided me the fundamental knowledge and information to be able to compete in this competition," Jia Jun said.
These wins further strengthen the reputation of TAR UC in providing topnotch ICT programmes and consequently produce graduates who are highly sought after in the industry.
The ICT programmes are offered at Diploma and Bachelor degree levels including Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Information Systems, Information Systems Engineering, Interactive Software Technology, Information Security, Internet Technology, Software Engineering, Enterprise Information Systems, and Software Systems Development.
