Landslide fear unsettles residents
> Setiawangsa folk worry repeat of incident after fissures appear on slope
KUALA LUMPUR: Setiawangsa residents near here are having sleepless nights following the appearance of fissures on a slope in the area.
“Our biggest nightmare happened in 2012 when a landslide occured at the same area. That incident affected about 700 residents,” Bukit Setiawangsa residents’ association president Ahmad Shukri Abdul Shukor told theSun.
He added residents were also unhappy with the way Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was handling the issue as he claimed DBKL did not provide them information on its action plan.
“We lodged a report with the DBKL about the appearance of fissures on April 22. When we did a follow-up, it confirmed the report but did not tell us its action plan. DBKL started repair works without informing the residents about it.
“I think DBKL should inform us so that we can be prepared,” Ahmad Shukri said.
Setiawangsa resident Nurul Amira Amiruddin, 21, said she was worried that a repeat of the incident five years ago would recur.
She said the slope at Jalan 11/55C in Puncak Setiawangsa has been covered with canvas, and each time she used the road she feared for her safety.
Checks by theSun showed that a DBKL contractor had started remedial works on the slope. Attempts to contact DBKL for comments were futile at press time.
On Dec 28, 2012, a landslide from the slope caused a luxury bungalow on the hilltop to split into two and forced the evacuation of some 283 residents in the area.
