DRBHICOM-C32 steals limelight with 63% gain

THE total warrant market turnover for the week ending May 12 was up 13.5% to RM151 million compared with the pervious week’s RM133 million. Trading interest in warrants over Malaysian counters remained strong, representi­ng close to 88% of the total warrant market turnover. Warrants over DRB-Hicom stole the limelight as the underlying share price rose over 17.5% week-on-week.

DRBHICOM-C32 came out top with 73 million units changing hands. Tracking the underlying closely, the warrant gained 62.5% to finish the week at RM0.130. Investors were seen taking profit in the warrant, selling back a total of 7.6 million units in the week ending May 12.

Demand for warrants over AirAsia-X (AAX) remained strong despite the underlying share starting the week off on a poor note, losing almost 1% on Monday. Trading activities in the warrants picked up later in the week as the underlying share rebounded on Thursday. AAX however lost 1% on Friday and ended the week in negative territory. Investors sold back 607,000 units of AAX-C7 out of the 56.2 million traded last week.

Hang Seng futures had a good run last week, gaining 2.9% to close at 25,063. Investors were seen taking home 3.8 million HSI-H93 out of the 16.1 million units traded last week. The put warrant lost 36.8% to close at RM0.275. On the other hand, investors sold back 3.3 million units of call warrant HSI-C84 as the warrant gained in tandem with the bullish HSI futures, closing 34.7% higher to RM0.640.

Call warrants move in tandem with their underlying price, rising in value as the underlying increases. On the other hand, put warrants move in an opposite direction, rising in value as the underlying falls.
