Sunway’s exceptional individuals
SUNWAY College recently awarded three foundation graduates “Exceptional Individual” awards at its recent Foundation in Arts (FIA) and Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST) graduation ceremony.
A first of its kind; the three exceptional recipients are Ajnish Ghimere, Melvin Siew Jen Fung and Jerry Tong Kai Wei. The three students were awarded for their efforts in overcoming their individual challenges and excelled in their respective foundation programmes, said Sunway’s foundation programmes director Ruma Lopes.
The said awards were presented to the three during a graduation ceremony conferring 414 students of the FIA and FIST programmes. It was a great honour for the three to receive the special award, especially among their fellow graduate peers who attended the event with their families and friends. This was also the first time such an award was being presented.
NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENTS
Lopes further enlightened and shared a little about each of the recipient’s backgrounds. She said that Ajnish, a victim of the Nepal earthquake, had lost almost everything and was given a chance to further his studies via the Sunway Mercy Malaysia Nepal Earthquake Relief Scholarship. His fellow recipient Melvin, surpassed expectations, receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Subject Award for Computing and the Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship, together with the Exceptional Individual Award – all despite being visually challenged. Tong on the other hand, was said to be a very special student. “Jerry worked so hard and tried in his special way to learn in a normal class environment. This young man taught the lecturers to teach in a different way, taught his classmates to think and learn to embrace diversity. His gentleness in this sometimes rough and uncaring world touched every single one of us,” said Lopes.
