Aberdeen end 26-year wait for win at Rangers

-

ABERDEEN claimed their first victory at Ibrox for nearly 26 years as they sealed second place in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-1 defeat of Rangers yesterday.

Graeme Shinnie fired Aberdeen into a ninthminute lead before Ryan Christie doubled their advantage five minutes after the break.

Substitute Martyn Waghorn pulled one back for Rangers but Aberdeen, who had substitute Jayden Stockley sent off late on, hung on to end a run of 41 matches without a win at Ibrox that stretched back to September 1991.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha said his side hadn’t coped with the pressure Aberdeen had put them under.

“We could not get the ball or the second ball and could not get the team compact,” he said.

“The boys tried to do their very best and when our goal came I really believed something was possible.”

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes thought his side were worthy winners.

“I thought we were tidy in our work, efficient and got after Rangers,” McInnes said.

“The players deserve a lot of credit. Disappointed to end with 10 men but thankful we managed to win a game we deserved to win.”

Elsewhere, Inverness ensured the relegation battle will go to the final game of the season as they closed to within one point of secondbottom Hamilton following a 2-0 win over Dundee.
