> Regulator urges more ecommerce businesses to register despite increase

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 50,882 online entrepreneurs throughout the country have registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) as of May 12 this year.

CCM chief executive officer Datuk Zahrah Abdul Wahab Fenner said there was an increase in the trend of online business registrations recorded since 2015 with an average of 1,000 business registrations monthly.

“I notice that there is a growth in the business sector from year to year, especially in online business. However, from this total we estimate that there are still many online business entrepreneurs who have yet to register their business.

“The registration is very important to ensure that authorities and online buyers are able to detect fraudulent companies.

“CCM hopes more entrepreneurs will register with us, to comply with the act stipulated and to protect the rights of consumers as purchasers because when there are cases of cheating action can be taken against registered sellers, otherwise it will be difficult to take action,” she said when met at the official opening of the One CCM Carnival (Penang state level) last night.

According to the CCM website, 14,959 companies including 15 foreign companies were registered from January to April while 156,092 businesses and 1,204 limited liability partnerships were also registered in the same period.

The three-day carnival, which began on Friday, aimed to assist entrepreneurs, especially on-line business operators expand their business. It was officiated by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

At the event, a memorandum of understanding between CCM and Lazada was signed with Zahrah representing CCM while Lazada was represented by its chief executive officer, Kevin Lee Fong Siang.
