MACC: Crooked politicians beware!

> Anti-graft body chief says action will be taken against them ‘one by one’

- BY AMAR SHAH MOHSEN

KUALA LUMPUR: It is just a matter of time before the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) begins hauling up politicians involved in graft, said its chief commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad.

He said he knew better when would be the right time to take action against such politicians, and that it should not be questioned.

“My statement is clear. When I say I would take action, I mean it. So just wait and see.

“We will act (on them) one by one. It has been less than a year since I helmed MACC. I have about four years more. So be patient,” he said after a walkabout and the launching of the MACC 3J Campaign (Jangan Kautim, Jangan Settle, Jangan Hulur) at Berjaya Times Square yesterday.

Dzulkifli was responding to PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s statement on Tuesday that MACC’s decision not to take action until after the general election was “silly and unfair”.

“I said I will act. If I had said that no action would be taken, then his statement would be relevant,” Dzulkifli said.

On another matter, Dzulkifli urged the public not to be afraid to come out and report incidents of corruption to the MACC, saying they would be protected by the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.

“We can promise those who provide us with information that their identity as well as the information given will be protected by the Act.”

On the possibility of foreign investors shying away due to the high number of arrests involving corruption, Dzulkifli said that would not be case and was in fact, the opposite.

“When we do our job to ensure that those who abuse their power and are involved in corruption are taken to task, I believe investors will be more confident in our country.”

He said he met top leaders of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia on Tuesday, who commended MACC for its work.
