KUALA LUMPUR: A wanted criminal and his accomplice were gunned down following a shootout with the police early yesterday morning in Bandar Baru Sentul here.

City deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mazlan Lazim said in the 3.30am incident, a city serious crimes division team was on “Ops Rantau” rounds to check burglary activities in the area when the team members saw two cars being driven in a suspicious manner.

“The police waited near a traffic lights junction near Masjid Bandar Baru Sentul. Once the suspects approached the junction, they saw us and fled. We immediately gave chase as both drove off in separate directions,” he told a press conference at the scene.

Mazlan said one of the suspects, aged 46, crashed into a police patrol car in his bid to escape.

Moments later, policemen at the scene heard shots being fired from the suspect’s car and police returned fire in self-defence, killing the suspect.

Meanwhile, the other suspect, 26, was cornered in Jalan Segambut and and shot dead after he opened fire on the police team.

Mazlan said the suspect was also killed instantly.

The detectives found two guns, bullets, three machetes and other items, including cutters, gloves and ski masks in both cars.

“From our investigations, we found the suspects, one from Kuala Lumpur and the other from Penang, had criminal records for robbery and drugs. One of them is on our wanted list,” he said.

The bodies have been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a postmortem.

Also present at the press conference were City CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa and Sentul district police chief ACP R. Munusamy.

On Saturday, three machetewielding burglars were shot and killed by the police near a housing area in Dengkil.

The police tried to approach them, but the trio became aggressive and tried to attack the police with their weapons.

Police opened fire in selfdefence and killed them.
