‘ Super dad’ a blessing to ailing wife, kids
> After nine years of treatment, cancer-stricken mother on road to recovery
PETALING JAYA: If there was ever an award for best father, Carney Quek will nominate his father Quek Cham Sheng for it.
“My mum was diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer in 2008 and my father went all out to get the best treatment possible for her,” Carney said, adding that his mother is now on the road to recovery.
“Thank you, dad, for the sacrifice you made in ensuring mum is still with us now and for your undying love and the care you have showered us, we love you.”
His mother, Chang Chu San, said she is grateful to have a supportive soul mate in Cham Seng, who has done a lot for her, to the point where she does not need to worry about family matters and concentrate on her cancer treatment.
Cham Seng, a teacher, remained positive when his wife was diagnosed in 2008, and went the extra mile of looking online or asking around for the best medicine or doctor to help his wife, also a teacher.
He also went knocking on the doors of the Education Ministry and Health Ministry almost daily after work, seeking appointments with different officers, filling up different forms and submitting various emails to get the approval for subsidies on certain medication recommended by the doctor.
His hard work and determination paid off as he obtained the approval needed, and his wife gradually showed signs of recovery.
“It is my responsibility as both husband and father to care for the children and my wife when she is unwell. It is also my responsibility to do the best I can for them.
“We may later regret not taking the extra step at the time, so it is better to grab the opportunity that comes to us,” said Cham Seng, 54, at his USJ home.
He said although he was sad and worried about his wife’s condition then, he did not show it in front of her or their children.
