Rush for Hari Raya deals

> Shoppers throng KL stores for Aidilfitri purchases

KUALA LUMPUR: With yesterday being the last weekend before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, many people flocked to the city for last minute shopping.

Checks by theSun saw many purchasing traditional baju kurung with floral motifs that range from RM25 to RM200.

A mother of two was seen trying on a long dress with elaborate designs at a store in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR).

“It’s RM160 per piece, which is quite expensive.

“I’m buying it not only for Hari Raya as it can also be worn for work and informal occasions,” said Fatimah Hassan, from Seremban.

A 25-year-old executive echoed Fatimah’s sentiments, saying that it was a more practical approach as she was trying to save after moving from Kedah last year.

“I’ve scouted online recently and found that most baju kurung are more or less the same price.

“There are definitely more varieties such as the ‘English cotton’ baju kurung and other materials with floral motifs selling from RM50 onwards,” she said.

Further checks showed that men’s baju Melayu were also selling from RM50 onwards.

One of the shoppers, who wanted to be known only as Mokhtar, found that children’s clothes were expensive.

“Because of the high expenses, including school expenditure, most (parents) have taken up part-time jobs to supplement their income.

“It’s not enough if one earns RM2,000 in KL because of the high transport fares.

“It only makes sense to find alternative jobs, or work overtime.

“We have no choice but to sacrifice family time, but it needs to be done,” said Mokhtar, who is self-employed.

Shopkeepers in Masjid Jamek and Jalan TAR who keep track of their customers’ purchasing trend, said they were more prudent when buying new clothes.
