Vet jailed, another charged with graft

-

GEORGE TOWN: The High Court here yesterday upheld an eight-month jail term and a fine of RM2,000 against a veterinary officer for beating his wife four years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed made the decision after finding that the magistrate’s court had not erred in convicting and sentencing Mohammad Afandi Ismail, 39.

He was charged with committing the offence at about 4pm on Aug 21, 2013, at KPJ Hospital in Bandar Perda.

Meanwhile in JOHOR BARU, Bernama reported that an assistant veterinary officer pleaded not guilty in the sessions court yesterday to four counts of corruption involving RM35,000 between August 2013 and April 2014.

Mohd Razi Basar, 40, who heads the Ruminant Unit of the Johor Veterinary Service Department, made the plea after the charges were read out before judge Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nasir. The charges were made under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both.

Mohd Fauzi then set bail at RM30,000 in two sureties and ordered Mohd Razi to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Batu Pahat on the first week of every month pending disposal of the case.

The offences were allegedly committed in Kampung Belahan Tompok, Rengit, near Batu Pahat, on Aug 1 and Oct 22, 2013.
