> Students can expect to graduate with more than academic knowledge at Heriot-Watt

-

HAT drew me to Heriot-Watt was the opportunity to study in its campuses in the UK and Dubai. Such exposure would allow me to understand and experience different cultures, and benefit me in the future,” explained Ahmad Kamil. A former Foundation in Business student at HeriotWatt University Malaysia, Kamil is now pursuing the university’s undergraduate Psychology with Management programme.

Established in the 1800s, Heriot-Watt University now operates out of three countries: the UK, Dubai and Malaysia. It is renowned for its professionally relevant programmes and has received numerous accolades. Most recently, it was ranked 26th in the UK and fourth in Scotland according to the Guardian University Guide 2018.

“I’ve enjoyed getting a closer look at and understanding how the theories we learn in class are being applied in the real world,” enthused Kamil. He further added, “Studying subjects such as Organisational Behaviour and Social Psychology has really helped me understand how people would react to certain things. This is useful insight as I plan to pursue the business side of psychology”

“Key to our programme is that it is taught within a global context so that our graduates can practise anywhere in the world. Our students can expect to graduate with a sound understanding of academic knowledge and the practical skills required in the work-related setting. This ensures the marketability of our graduates within the global labour market,” explained Dr Sue Cowan, assistant Prof in psychology at Heriot-Watt University.

Attesting to the opportunities available for psychology graduates, Ng Yat Seng, senior manager of talent management at Synthomer, said, “Organisations are looking for psychology graduates, especially in human resources functions, who are equipped with the knowledge of the fundamentals of human behaviour and translating it into organisational strategies in attraction, development and retention.”

Additionally, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia organises regular talks and workshops by industry professionals, allowing students to get an in-depth look at the industries. This has proved to be invaluable for Kamil. “These helped me understand how psychology is utilised in the real world, and how it can be used to study how society reacts to change. Consequently, I would be better able to predict and understand individuals in my future workplace,” he said.
