OTTAWA: Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau on Wednesday gifted a former US embassy directly across the street from parliament to Canada’s more than 600 tribes, in a symbolic rapprochem­ent with indigenous peoples. He also ordered a nearby building housing his offices be stripped of its Langevin Block name which is associated with the “cultural genocide” of aboriginal­s. The embassy handover on a national day celebratin­g its aboriginal population “symbolises a turning point in Canada’s relationsh­ip with indigenous peoples”, a statement said. – AFP
