ERIOT- Watt University offers highly recognised degrees and provides the maximum number of exemptions for professional accounting papers by relevant professional bodies, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Institute of Charted Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW),” said Sarah Hannah Sharil Muha, an Accounting and Business Finance student at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. “The university provides a conducive ambience for students to develop and enhance their social skills.”

Established in the 1800s, HeriotWatt University is now one of the world’s leading universities. Recently, it ranked in the world’s top 2% of universities, placing 312th in the world, 40th in the UK and seventh in Scotland according to the QS World’s University Rankings 2017/18. Heriot-Watt offers programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its undergraduate Accounting and Business Finance programme is a three-year fulltime course with valid accreditation, allowing students to be eligible for exemption for up to eight or nine professional papers.

Sarah is part of the university’s pioneer batch of Accounting and Business Finance students. “The golden rule of studying in HeriotWatt is to be open-minded and to get out of your comfort zone, to gain and build experience instead of trying to fit in the crowd,” enthused Sarah. When asked to explain what she enjoys most about studying in Heriot-Watt, she said, “I feel a sense of gratitude for the knowledge I gain with regards to the topics learnt. Besides that, when opportunities kicked in, I made new friends and engaged with like-minded individuals.”

The programme has also helped her to develop links with industry. According to her, “Heriot-Watt regularly organises talks by multinational companies and working professionals in addition to annual career fairs. These programmes encourage students to broaden their network with potential employers. It is also a good environment that helps students to expose themselves to the issues and current dealings of the global and local finance industry.” This is in line with Heriot-Watt’s commitment to provide students with a professionally relevant education.
