The Lunar Cats
Author: Lynne Truss Publisher: Century ISBN: 9781780896724
THE LUNATICS – er, sorry – The Lunar Cats is a weird story that combines historical facts with, well, lunatic, ideas.
These ideas include 18thcentury scientists who happen to be talking cats, and a plot by an evil kitten to take over the world.
It might seem ridiculous, and it does become a tad tedious initially but then, it starts to grow on you, and once you accept that these cats can talk and act like humans, then anything goes.
The tale begins with a retired librarian named Alec Charlesworth who has had a traumatic run-in with evil talking cats before, and thus you will understand his closeness with his dog, Watson.
His unpleasant experience, however, does not prevent him from rescuing a little adorable kitten from the cold one December night – with unexpected (or is it expected?) terrifying consequences.
Alec soon finds himself neck deep in cats – cats who once voyaged around the world with Captain Cook, and cats who dig up graveyards and make pacts with the devil.
He also meets a voodoo doll intent on bad, bad things.
Together with a bunch of intellectual cats from the 15th century including a know-it-all cat named Roger, as well as a wellmeaning but spacey friend, Alec sets forth to rid the world of evil.
Not exactly heart-thumping stuff, but good fun nonetheless.
Of course, in order to enjoy this book, you’ll have to leave logic out of the equation.
