Scrutiny on govt projects
> MACC, Audit Dept to sit on committee for future developments, says Najib
KUALA LUMPUR: All future government projects will involve representatives from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Audit Department to ensure efficiency and integrity in its implementation, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
On the success of the second phase of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line launched on July 17, Najib said the administrative structure used to manage the project had contributed to its success and speedy completion.
He said in order to ensure the project was transparent and had a high level of integrity, MACC representatives sat on the executive committee of the project.
“A good structure in terms of governance and funding, and a transparent tender system and implementation have obviously been the factors that made the MRT project a success,” he said in Parliament yesterday.
Najib was replying to a question from Datuk Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) on the impact of the MRT system that was developed without any concession agreement and at a much lower cost than the original estimate.
Najib said the MRT project has an executive committee (exco) chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, with members from other government agencies.
“Through the exco, matters like allocation or obstacles can be addressed and resolved immediately.
“The exco structure has accelerated the project implementation and contributed to the success of the project.”
The SBK line was a fully governmentborne project, completed on schedule and had saved RM2 billion in construction costs.
“The advantage of this project, was that the government could strictly control and closely monitor the project implementation,” Najib said, adding that through the project, several amenities and infrastructures have been upgraded.
These included the main roads in Kajang such as Jalan Cheras and Jalan Reko, that were widened from two lanes to four.
“Building of bus stops and taxi stands were also included for better integration of the transportation system.”
Najib said people in the Klang Valley who do not live near the MRT stations could use the estimated 300 feeder buses or leave their cars at Park n Ride locations.
