We are bent on weeding out graft: IGP
KUALA LUMPUR: InspectorGeneral of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar admitted that bribery exists in the police force, but added that he is committed to weeding it out.
“It exists. I don’t deny that corruption exists in the police force,” he said yesterday.
Khalid was speaking to reporters at the nationwide corruption-free pledge signing ceremony between the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at Pulapol here.
“By taking pledges like this, it is one of the ways we can ensure that this does not happen in the police force.”
He said since the police started the standard compliance and integrity department (JIPS), there has been an increase in bribery and abuse of power cases in the force but that is because JIPS is weeding them out.
“When we started JIPS, we saw that there was an increase in abuse of power and bribery but that doesn’t mean that it has increased. It just means that spotting these cases has become better. What’s important is we can control the police force from being involved in bribery.”
When asked if taking anticorruption pledges is new in the police force, Khalid said that everyone in the force takes a pledge not to be involved in corruption.
He said the force is targeting zero bribery cases.
