Malaysia clinches gold in archery

MALAYSIA won their second and third gold medals through the women’s and men’s team compound archery events at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in Bukit Jalil yesterday, defending the gold medals they won in the 2015 Singapore games.

The Malaysian women’s team lifted the gold after edging Vietnam 253-252 in the nail-biting encounter at the Synthetic Field, while the Malaysian men’s compound archery team added an- other gold after beating Singapore 228-222.

The national women’s team in the final event was comprised of Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh, Nurul Syazhera Mohd Asmi and Saritha Cham Nong while Vietnam was represente­d by Chau Kieu Oanh, Le Ngoc Huyen and Thi Nha Le Nguyen.

Malaysia emerged as the winner when Saritha collected the full 10 points in the shoot off after both teams were tied at 225.

“At that time, I only thought of what the coach had told us and the support from my teammates,” she told the media after the match.

Fatin and Nurul said they were grateful that all the efforts made during training had been fruitful on the day of the competitio­n.

The bronze medal went to Indonesia who beat Thailand 225222.

Synchronis­ed swimmer Zylane Lee Yhing Huey clinched silver for Malaysia at the 29th SEA Games’ solo free routine event yesterday.

Zylane, 25, secured a total of 74.7000 points, 0.3000 behind Singapore’s Debbie Soh Li Fei who bagged the gold at the National Aquatic Centre.

The bronze went to another Singaporea­n, Miya Yong Hsing, who scored 73.0333 points. Another Malaysian swimmer, Foong Yan Nie, finished fourth with 71.8667 points.

This is the first medal won by Malaysia in aquatics at the Games.
