Standing in unity

WHAT is it like to be 60 years old? For many ‘new’ senior citizens, bodily aches and pains become part and parcel of life.

Careful steps and mindful movements become necessary, there are increasing numbers of wrinkles and pepperwhite hair to contend with, and we begin to appreciate a simple life filled with routine.

Having lived some eight decades, I am humbled and grateful to have experienced the significant Merdeka journey, with different communities coming together to become a single, united country.

The sense of unity and cooperation among all races was immense then, which helped pave the way for the formation of Malaysia.

Fast forward to Aug 31, 2017. How can we mark this auspicious day?

For one, set aside our individual pursuits, and make a conscious, sincere effort to celebrate the beauty, unity, and vibrancy of both our country and its people.

Extend a sincere greeting to everyone you meet, with a hearty handshake and a genuine smile, too.

Recall what our forefathers had to sacrifice and fight for, in order to claim our country from its colonial rulers.

Be thankful that we still have our own homeland that is free from nature’s calamities, and we still have the right to vote and put forth our choices of leaders, too. Be Light ... “Happy Merdeka Day to everyone, may peace and happiness prevail on this land we call Tanah Air-ku.”
